: my sky status from lufthansa

This big banner caught my eye on NYTime.com earlier today. Not sure how anyone could miss it. Took up large portion of the upper part of the page.

It takes you to a Lufthansa page where you can register for My Sky Status. What is it you ask? “In the air doesn’t mean out of touch. While you’re flying, MySkyStatus automatically sends status updates to your social networks. It’s travel made social and it’s easy to set up.” The banner and the homepage seem to have real-time updates from users, and the homepage has global stats. I guess this is not a new service, but it has been redesigned/re-engineered recently.

I wont even bother commenting on whether a service like this is worthwhile or even socially desirable. Seems like an interesting platform for Lufthansa to engage their customers though. Seeing as how the system is open to all flights, it could engage all their potential customers.

: up there

Great work from the NY agency Mother for Stella Artois. “Up There reveals the dying craft of large scale hand painted advertising and the untold story of the painters struggling to keep it alive.” Amazing what these guys go through to get this work done. Not many still doing this today. Most of what we see is printed on vinyl where most of the work was done from a comfortable desk in Photoshop.

Check out the accompanying site here. The videos below are the trailer (top) for those of you with little time, and the full film (bottom) for the full experience. It is beautifully shot. Directed by Malcolm Murray. Check out some of his other work at HereIsThis.com

: interactive ovi maps

Love this kind of stuff. Its some cool work done by Weiden Kennedy in London. I must have missed this by just a couple of days while in London last month and was staying only blocks from this spot. Strangely enough, I was there working on a project for Nokia as well.

: pandora advertising

I’m a big fan of Pandora. It’s an amazing service, and I will gladly suffer advertising to receive it. That said, they are quite clever at how they deliver that advertising. Just noticed how when they play a video ad, the page also becomes a sort of overall channel for that same brand like the Intel and MasterCard examples below. I especially like the page take-overs and seeing how that brand can be reflected through the whole page visually. The Clorox ad is such a great example of this.

On this Easter, a shout out to the undead. Brilliant and simple poster for True Blood. Not sure who did this work for HBO, but go check out their new slick sight.

: pepsiyosumo.com

Via story in Advertising Age

With a great tagline that uses the Pepsi legacy and addresses this market “There has never been a generation like ours”, Pepsi launches new site for Latino community focusing on people and calling on Latino consumers to submit and share their own stories. Shameless targeting of an important ethnic consumer group? Or maybe just a really smart strategy to engage this ever growing segment? Discuss.

Visit the site here – www.pepsiyosumo.com

Also, take a quick look at the campaign videos on YouTube. With language like “show the world we are changing the landscape of this country” and “we need you to play the role you know best, the role of you” – Pepsi is taking a very strong alliance position of sorts with this community. I like it. Its bold!

: tropicana arctic sun

This is very nice. Thanks Stephanie for the Tweet on this.

Quote from YouTube post – “On January 8, we brought the sun to Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Because we believe brighter mornings make for brighter days.”

Something I know we can all relate to here in Boston and Toronto. Probably not so much in SF :) Bring on spring!

: ryan mcGinley and levis

Ryan McGinley is one of my favorite contemporary photographers. I find the way he uses the extremes of light very inspirational. Also, his personality and insistence on his style and art are unfaltering. I would love to see him work on some adidas campaigns either for Originals or Performance. Seems like a really great fit to me especially coming at it from an edgy, on the fringe youth angle.

I first came across him by accident, but he has been showing up all over the place recently. You have probably seen his work and don’t realize it. Sigür Ros album covers and music videos, NYTimes Oscars portraits series, Gossip Girl mentions, Levis TV commercials, and most recently NY Times Magazine Winter Olympics portrait series.

Warning – his site and videos include some nudity, but it is not pornographic. It might just however be a bit on the unusual side for some of you out there. Just sayin.

The videos below are the two different campaigns for Levis that Ryan McGinley has directed. It’s amazing to see someone grow from his art into these types of more commercial roles without losing their essential edge. Incredible music track on the first one for Levis and Opening Ceremony.

: super ads

I don’t watch the Super Bowl or football for that matter. That does mean that I miss the ads. It is the only part of the spectacle I am interested in seeing. Thanks to the internet though, we never have to miss any of them even if you did step out to the kitchen for more nachos.

This is an even better way to see them though: the Top 20 Super Bowl Ads Ever. And of course, #1 is Apple’s 1984. I am not 100% sure how they came up with this list. It does look like it is based on user voting and rating. Enjoy!
