: future banking
Thanks to Adam Bracegirdle at Sid Lee for pointing me to this.
Check out the fantastic video here at this link of IDEO’s work at designing the next generation of ATMs. As is typical for them, they start by asking how to make the technology more human. This, as usual leads to some amazing insights. Then they layer on the elements that will “delight and surprise” the user, to create strong personal and “emotional connections” between banks (brands) and users. Right on.
: but does it float?
This is a great collaborative, curated blog of imagery. The two responsible are Folker Gorter (see design work at link) and Atley Gasky a designer at GOOD. I especially love the little nuggets/themes for the individual posts. Thought provoking and inspiring – like this one for instance “Compositions of speeds and slownesses on a plane of immanence”
: field
I am drawn to this kind of interactive and generative work that Field does. They work out of London for brands such as Red Bull (see video below), Nike, Nokia, and XBox. They are led by Marcus Wendt, and Vera-Maria Glahn, who draw inspiration from art, nature, science, and other generative processes such as concepts around artificial life. Go visit their site for a view into how this work translates into animation, print, websites, and interactive installations.
“New kinds of imagery can be found on unknown pathways. Generative processes, interactivity, and science and technology provide a wide field of inspiration and new ways of thinking that foster unusual strategies and powerful concepts for visual design. FIELD uses code to expand the graphical toolbox, and designs custom software to express an idea cross-media.”

: livebrush
This is actually a lot of fun. Liverbrush, an Adobe Air (cross platform) app, “is a unique motion-based drawing tool. Use the power of motion to toss graphics around the screen or elegantly swing the brush around your cursor.” When you are done doing that, export in various formats to use in your work!
I am often frustrated by how hard it is to quickly create free form graphics in something as powerful and comprehensive as Illustrator. Maybe this is a good answer to that.
The video below is okay, but just getting in there and playing around gives you a really good feel for how it works. Let me know what you think if you use it.
: jess3*
jess3* is a pretty cool full service agency which I believe is in Virgina. Very distinct style, but across a wide range of services such as data visualization, illustration, web design, online product design, print and branding. Prolific!
Below is The Conversation Prism visualization that appeared in Communication Arts.
: section design
Very nice visualization work from Paul Butt at Section Design in England. Hey says he only has 3 years of experience. Wow. I’m impressed. Look out for great things to come I think. See his site here, or check out his flickr examples by clicking on images below.
: alex trochut
Came across this amazing designer again yesterday through a shared post. I saw hi speak in Lisbon a couple years ago. Amazing talent, and the work is just gorgeous. He seems to occupy that increasingly rare spot of graphic designer and illustrator. On top of that, his range in terms of styles seems boundless.
Head on over to http://www.alextrochut.com/ to view his entire portfolio.
: cocodot
Having used Evite earlier this year to plan a surprise party, I have to say I was underwhelmed by the system and the options. Along comes Cocodot. The design options are quite nice, much easier to use, and the whole setup makes a lot more sense including the social network components. Not a huge fan of the black background which makes the overall experience a bit busy with the competing visual elements that to sit on the background.
Especially nice are the myriad choices of visuals, ability to use your own design, or customize existing designs with the panels seen in the screen grab below. All right. Which one of you is using this to plan and invite me to a party?
: chart porn
Call it what it is i guess. Here is one for all you lovers of data visualizations. Great inspiration for work, or even just casual browsing. Very educational. Enjoy some fine examples below or visit the blog/site at this link ChartPorn.org
Tony G., the first one is for you.
: need a typeface?
Check out some amazing student work. Might come in handy some day. You can buy this poster here.
“So you need a typeface is an alternative way on how to choose fonts (or just be inspired) for a specific project, not just by browsing through the pages of FontBook. The list is (very loosely) based on the top 50 of the “Die 100 besten schriften”.”
